It depends on the visa category. In 2026 biometrics are waived for most categories (L, M, Q2, S2, X2, F and Z under 30 days), so personal attendance at the consulate is usually not required. Fingerprinting remains mandatory for long-stay visas (Q1, S1, X1, Z over 30 days), and in those cases the applicant attends in person.
