Since 2023 Alipay and WeChat Pay opened a Tour mode for foreign cards. You can now pay for taxis, metro, cafés and hotels by QR without a Chinese bank. Here's the full 15-minute setup.
Alipay Tour setup

- Register with your phone (foreign numbers OK)
- Enable Tour Pass → link Visa/Mastercard
- Verify with passport photo + selfie
- Limits: $1000 / transaction, $5000 / day
- Fee: 0% under 200 CNY, 3% above

- Download WeChat
- Register (a contact may need to verify you)
- Me → Services → Wallet → Cards → Add
- Link Visa/Mastercard
- Same limits as Alipay

How to pay
Two QR flows cover 95% of venues.
