China Student Visa X1/X2 — 2026 Preparation Guide
The X visa is the only legal route to study in China for Ukrainian citizens enrolling in programmes longer than 180 days. The key difference between X1 and X2 is programme duration.
Short answer
X1 — study over 180 days (bachelor, master, PhD, full-time language). Within 30 days of entry, convert into a Residence Permit. X2 — short courses up to 180 days. Both require JW201 or JW202 and an Admission Notice.
JW201 vs JW202 — the difference
JW201 is issued to students on a Chinese government grant (CSC, Confucius, provincial). JW202 is for self-funded students. Both are filled in by the university and sent to the student.

Required documents for X1
The X1 pack is the largest of all China visa types:
- Form V.2013 + photo 33×48 mm
- Passport (≥12 months validity)
- Admission Notice (original JW201/JW202)
- School diploma/degree with apostille and translation
- Transcript with apostille
- Form 192 (Foreigner Physical Examination Record)
- Criminal record certificate with apostille (master/PhD)
- Financial proof: statement ≥USD 5,000 or scholarship
- Insurance for the study period
Form 192 health check — the key item
For X1, a Form 192 examination is mandatory at a licensed clinic. In Kyiv — KDC, ID-Medical and several private clinics. Includes chest X-ray, ECG, HIV, syphilis and hepatitis blood tests, ultrasound. Valid for 6 months. Cost: UAH 3,000–5,500.
Residence Permit within 30 days
After entry on X1 the student has 30 days to apply at the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of the city of study and obtain a Residence Permit for the programme duration. This plastic card replaces the visa.
Common refusal reasons
The PRC consulate most often refuses X visas because of:
- Mismatch between JW202 programme and financial proof.
- Missing apostilles on diploma/certificate.
- Expired Form 192 (over 6 months).
- Doubts about genuine study intent (e.g. a 30-year-old with no background applying for language courses).
