What is a Work Visa to China
The Chinese Work Visa (Type Z) is for contract-based employment in China. It splits into three categories by duration: Z up to 30 days (performers, concerts, installation, audit) requires no conversion and allows remote submission; Z up to 90 days (most often models) requires biometrics and converts to a residence permit; Z from 180 days (Categories A/B/C by qualification) requires biometrics and a residence permit. The Chinese employer prepares the documents to open the visa. Z visas are always single-entry — they are an entry permit for subsequent residence permit conversion. The geographic city restriction (5–10 cities listed in the document package) is critical.

Visa sub-types & validity parameters
Short Z (≤30 days, single)
Performers, concerts, short specific assignments. No residence permit conversion. Remote submission via Chișinău is possible (no biometrics needed, since there is no conversion). Each concert requires a separate document package.
Z up to 90 days (with biometrics)
Most often model visas. With biometrics, converts to a residence permit in China. The '1 day in Chișinău' scheme. A separate category — not part of A/B/C.
Long Z Category A (from 180 days)
Top-tier specialists in narrow fields China actively recruits. Personal submission with biometrics mandatory. Converts to a work residence permit within 30 days of arrival.
Long Z Category B (from 180 days)
Categorized professionals — engineers, IT, teachers, qualified specialists. Personal submission with biometrics. Residence permit conversion.
Long Z Category C (from 180 days)
Baseline — less specialized work, low-skilled or seasonal workers. Personal submission with biometrics. Residence permit conversion.
Please remember that exiting mainland China into Hong Kong or Macau is legally treated as crossing an international border. If you hold a Single visa, exiting to Hong Kong immediately voids it, preventing you from returning to the mainland. For trips planning transits or side-visits to Hong Kong/Macau with a return to the mainland, you must apply for a Double or Multi visa.

6 visa refusal causes & our expert solutions
The consulate issues the wrong visa type due to wording in the invitation
We check the invitation before submission, point out errors to the client/Chinese partner, and recommend edits based on real cases
The invitation was obtained from unverified intermediaries on Telegram or other unofficial sources
We work only with licensed Chinese companies and verified partners who bear legal responsibility for the invitation
Mismatch of dates, routes, or personal data between the COVA form and the invitation
We carry out a multi-level check of all documents before submission to rule out any discrepancies
The route includes Hong Kong or Macao during a trip on a single-entry visa
We analyze the route in advance and recommend the correct visa type or an adjustment to the travel plan
The photo does not meet the consulate's technical requirements (poor background, clothing, lighting, or file format)
We provide detailed photo instructions and check the image before submitting documents
Submitting documents less than a week before departure, with no time reserve for processing and logistics
We recommend submitting documents at least 3 weeks before the trip and warn about risks and timelines at the consultation stage
Step-by-step application workflow
Client document preparation
Prerequisite: the Chinese employer has already obtained the Foreign Work Permit Notice and prepared the contract. From this point we work — apostille of diploma and criminal record certificate in Ukraine (Hague Convention). Translation to Chinese. Medical examination per employer's request. Full package assembly.
Electronic submission (Stage 1)
We fill the COVA form, upload documents to the consulate website. Online review takes 2–5 business days.
Short Z remote stamping · Z with biometrics '1 day in Chișinău'
Short Z up to 30 days (no biometrics): you ship the passport via Nova Poshta, we handle stamping in Chișinău. Z with biometrics (up to 90 and from 180 days): you fly in for 1 day to Chișinău, submit biometrics, return home on a second passport.
Residence Permit after arrival
For Z with biometrics (up to 90 and from 180 days) — conversion to work residence permit within 30 days. Managed by the employer in China. For short Z up to 30 days — no conversion; you exit at the end of the term.
Common DIY application mistakes
Ensure you avoid these critical paperwork issues to guarantee approval:
- Trying to work in a city not listed in the Work Permit — deportation and 10-year ban
- Expecting Z to grant the right to work anywhere in China — the visa is tied to specific 5–10 cities
- For performers — using one package for a series of shows in different cities
- Submitting a short Z for work exceeding 30 days — illegal work = deportation + 10-year ban
- Missing the 30-day residence permit conversion deadline for Z with biometrics (up to 90 and from 180 days)
- Trying to obtain the Foreign Work Permit Notice without the Chinese employer's involvement
Frequently Asked Questions
A — top-tier specialists in narrow fields. B — categorized professionals (engineers, IT, teachers). C — baseline (low-skilled or seasonal workers). Important: A/B/C are categories only for Z from 180 days. Models are a separate Z up to 90 days, not Category C. The category determines what the employer asks of the client, not our price.
Exclusively the Chinese employer through local administration. We do not issue work permits — it's outside our scope. We help only with client documents (diploma, criminal record, medical exam) and visa submission.
Mandatory for Z up to 90 days (models) and long Z from 180 days at the Moldovan consulate. Not required for short Z (≤30 days); remote submission is possible.
$270 turnkey for all Z types (short and long A/B/C). Preparation-only service for self-submission — $150.
Z does NOT grant the right to work anywhere in China. The document package lists 5–10 permitted cities (for models and most long Z). Work outside the list = deportation. For performers on series of shows — separate package per engagement.
Z is always single — it's an entry permit for subsequent residence permit conversion. After conversion, entries/exits are unrestricted under the residence permit.
Path 1 (recommended): ask the employer to include children in the Work Permit — we open Z for client + visas for children in one submission. Path 2 (classic): after receiving the residence permit — S visas for family members.
For long Z with biometrics — you fly in to Chișinău for 1 day, submit biometrics, hand us the passport, return home on a second passport. We courier the finished passport to Ukraine. Real time in Moldova: 1 day, not a week.
For long Z — after conversion to work residence permit, extensions are processed via local administration without leaving the country. Managed by the employer.
